Jet lag, WonderWoman, 80’s birthday party, hangover, memories…cheers to the freaking weekend!

13 May

I think this is the first time the jet lag hit me so badly, I am wide awake in the evening, or let’s say at night and in the morning (let’s say  nearly in the afternoon) I can’t still force myself to get up at all…I’m sure it’s going to be dramatic on Monday morning going back in office!

The trip to Miami was great, as usual, and being back is always very difficult, luckily this time I had something to look forward to, a birthday party in London, fancy dress theme, 80’s glam.

For someone just BORN IN THE 80’S…It’s not an easy challenge, plus Italian people don’t do fancy dress outside carnival time or Halloween.

I managed to get a dress from my friend, I was really looking forward to wear it until I thought….shit…I have to go up to London on the train dress up like that!

WonderWoman…yes it was me! And my husband….Sonny Crocket from Miami Vice…I always thought British people mind their own business …. Why everyone was laughing at me??? Rude fuckers!

Couldn’t sleep at all from 3am to 5am…and at 11.30am I felt like I was trapped in a nightmare…dreaming about a school show with Peter Andre as a guest….jet lag is making me crazy! I want to live again the nice Miami memories…here we are.

Simplicity, memories and love: the best mix for your food, wherever you are.

28 Mar

In the last few days probably still due to the jet lag I was struggling to fall asleep at night, lots of things were going through my mind and I thought about a few things I miss. I miss my family, I miss Milan, the city where I studied for 3 years during my time at the university, miss the sunshine, miss an afternoon snack, miss a slice of pizza while walking around the shops in town….so as you can imagine I am homesick, most of the time.

Maybe for this reason I started to look for traditional Italian flavour, very simple basic things that can make me feel more at home, some example?

Pane e mortadella – bread and large Italian cold sausage, it used to be an afternoon snack (or nearly a meal) during an afternoon of playing around with friends at the playground (as you can see my mind really went back more than 20 years ago)

My re interpretation of this amazing but basic meal? Pane, mortadella, cheddar cheese, salad…overlooking the fields, it made me feel like a kid again.

British people and American people have on their basic Mac & Cheese…discussable anyway because I am a proud Italian and I always like to make an argument over everything (that’s me unfortunately!). A basic Italian recipe to hit back? Gnocchi with gorgonzola and noci – gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese and walnuts, classic, quick and so tasty!

After a day spent gardening, enjoying the weather, enjoying the sunset from the living room if you are not too hungry what the best thing you can do? Share dinner…spaghetti alla bolognese in one plate with two forks … THAT’S AMORE.

Cold weather, I’m bored, so why not think about food? As if I never think about food! Turning into a foodie in the wonderland

I must say I have started to enjoy so much the food section on WordPress, it makes me hungry just looking at and I keep on going, blog from blog…what is it wrong with me? Is it an Italian thing, am I getting old or what? I used to laugh at my parents and their friends when I was young and we were going in holiday in Liguria (homeland of Pesto), the town where we have our apartment has a nice high street promenade with designer shops and lots of deli (gastronomia), cheese shops, spit chicken roast shop (polleria), take away pizza slice (pizza al trancio) and even more shops that probably I forgot they exist, in the afternoon we used to go shopping and every food shop I had to shout to my parents and their friends “Come on How can you stare at food in a window?? Let’s go to see some shoes!”

But during the summer 2010 my world felt like it was turning upside down: I went back there  with my husband and walking around the shops, we did the same thing my parents and their friends were doing ages ago…staring at the deli’s window! So because I mentioned, I’d like to bring back some memories from that holiday.

Must be an Italian thing, must be a British thing I don’t know…but I cannot think about nothing else than: What shall I cook? Or shall we watch Masterchef, or Jamie Oliver, or Gordon Ramsay or Lorraine Pascale?

So, let’s face it, it’s freezing today and not even a bit of sunshine to light up  this Wednesday, zero degrees or 32 F…and not much going on, so shall I show you my latest creations? Why not?

Green soup from last night (courgette, green peas, cucumber and lemon thyme

My traditional lasagne (with a bit of chorizo in the meat to give that right kick)

And today for lunch, I fancied omelette, first one I make in my life…I didn’t look good but I assure you it was tasty (omelette with cheddar cheese, chorizo and tomatoes)

Feeling full now…cuddling up with my blanket on the sofa, cup of tea on the table…and looking at the wordpress food section…love being at home!
