Simplicity, memories and love: the best mix for your food, wherever you are.

28 Mar

In the last few days probably still due to the jet lag I was struggling to fall asleep at night, lots of things were going through my mind and I thought about a few things I miss. I miss my family, I miss Milan, the city where I studied for 3 years during my time at the university, miss the sunshine, miss an afternoon snack, miss a slice of pizza while walking around the shops in town….so as you can imagine I am homesick, most of the time.

Maybe for this reason I started to look for traditional Italian flavour, very simple basic things that can make me feel more at home, some example?

Pane e mortadella – bread and large Italian cold sausage, it used to be an afternoon snack (or nearly a meal) during an afternoon of playing around with friends at the playground (as you can see my mind really went back more than 20 years ago)

My re interpretation of this amazing but basic meal? Pane, mortadella, cheddar cheese, salad…overlooking the fields, it made me feel like a kid again.

British people and American people have on their basic Mac & Cheese…discussable anyway because I am a proud Italian and I always like to make an argument over everything (that’s me unfortunately!). A basic Italian recipe to hit back? Gnocchi with gorgonzola and noci – gnocchi with gorgonzola cheese and walnuts, classic, quick and so tasty!

After a day spent gardening, enjoying the weather, enjoying the sunset from the living room if you are not too hungry what the best thing you can do? Share dinner…spaghetti alla bolognese in one plate with two forks … THAT’S AMORE.

It’s Monday, but please l pretend I’m still enjoying the weekend!

This weekend just gone was just about lots of food, lots of cooking and lots of drinking…that’s why I don’t want to let it go!

I let the pictures to speak for me:

Saturday night, in, eating Italian cheese and drinking red wine

At one stage the cat decided to read my magazine

Sunday morning, good start with a cappuccino

Followed by bacon and fried egg in fresh bread…

Followed by a few hours enjoying the swimming pool, sauna, steam room and jacuzzi, so we could eat more later!

But it’s not over yet, my husband made a new york cheesecake to show me that I suck at baking…he’s right!

Now, do you understand why I nearly cried this morning when I checked my weight on the scale? I have two solutions…or I change all the jeans in my closet or…I eat a bit less!

Stick to what you are able to do!!!

Last night I tried to make the cupcakes, I had all the good intentions, all the good ingredients, but I failed. The sponge came out fine and tasty, apparently I don’t get on very well with butter, I melted the butter in the microwave, mixed with icing sugar, added the strawberries…nothing to do my husband threw the mix away and he did the icing again…right next time I cook some lasagne and I leave the cupcakes to the experts!!!!

Don’t like too much to use butter…next time I’ll go to visit my friend Sarah in her lovely cupcake’s shop, it will be worth to drive 90 miles to get some AMAZING cupcakes!!! If you want to see her website that’s the address http://www.whatsupcupcake.com/

Right, today I slept until 10am, I needed some rest!! Went out for lunch my friend and her gorgeous girls….and now I’m planning the Saturday night dinner using a book of Italian recipes….STICK TO WHAT YOU ARE ABLE TO DO is going to be my new motto!!!!

The pleasure of being back home

1 Oct

I still cannot believe I’m back home with my family  after more than 10 weeks, I’m feeling like a teenager again and I love being spoilt by my parents!!!!!

Had a very nice dinner with them last night, my mum cooked for me aubergine parmigiana and I love it! But I started with a nice glass of Prosecco to celebrate my arrival + a big slice of focaccia from Genova, God I miss the Italian regional cuisine so much!

My Saturday morning started early, every time I come back my mum sends me to hospital for blood test, just to check if I’m all right (bless her, funny enough I had last blood test  7weeks ago, I should start to explain to my mum that we have doctors and hospitals in the United Kingdom as well!) 😉

After the hospital visit we went for breakfast and I was dying for a cappuccino and croissant with cream, amazing!

I have started to realise that I become happy with such as small things when I’m back, now after have been out shopping for a few hours I’m back home, waiting for another amazing lunch and in the afternoon probably family again, aunts, cousins etc, and tonight, finally tonight, it’s time to go out with my friends! I haven’t seen my best friend since my wedding and I cannot wait to see her, hopefully we are not going to cry when we will see each other!

My Italian day so far has been great, and it will be amazing all weekend long, cheers!!!!!
